The diameter, when
fully extended, was 132
inches. The table had a telescopic screw
mechanism patented in 1861 by Samuel Hawkins
of Bishopsgate, London. CONDITION
There were structural areas of concern: base of
the table was unstable, due to most joinery being
loose, extension glides were loose adding to
table’s instability when extended. One of the metal
brackets from the extension mechanism was
broken. Veneer was delaminating in several areas
of the table aprons. Table top had splits almost
along the entire diameter. Many leaves were
warped. Some of the leaves were starting to
separate or they were entirely separated along
the seams. In some areas finish was discolored
and had scratches.
TREATMENT
The entire table was taken apart, and old adhesive
was cleaned from the joints. All necessary
structural repairs were performed. The table glides
were inspected and tighten . The crank mechanism
was lubricated and the broken bracket was welded.
The splits were secured with proper adhesive and
wooden butterfly reinforcements. All possible
adjustments were made to improve the fitting of the
table leaves. The instructions and marking for all
the leaves were provided for consistent and proper
placement when in use. A thin layer of English
polish was applied for consistent sheen and color.
