CONDITION
The drop front would not open and close properly.
The drawers and case structure was unstable.
One of the drawers did not fit the structure and
most of the drawer pulls were missing. In the
secretary interior, the writing surface was dirty,
and had discolored and damaged finish.
Throughout, the veneer was severely damaged;
it had cracks, lifting, dents, and marks, worn and
missing areas. The finish was clouded, uneven
and damaged. There were missing sections of
molding on lower portions of apron.
TREATMENT
All surfaces were cleaned of oils and residues.
The sections of damaged veneer were consolidated
using animal glue. New veneer of the same wood
and grain direction was applied and finished to
match the original. All drawer fronts, guides and
interior structures were aligned and repaired.
Missing moldings were restored and installed to
match. Drop front was repaired. Color was matched
to all repairs. New drawer pulls were installed to
match existing. Then English polish and wax was
applied to the surfaces.
